Private Flute Lessons

Hi, I’m Megan!

I have been teaching flute in various settings since 2018, including group classes and sectionals, music camps, and one-on-one sessions.

I hold a degree in both flute performance and music education and hold a Washington State K-12 teaching certification endorsed in both general music and instrumental music.

I participate in continued learning and WMEA/NAfME conferences to keep up my certification, and have also privately studied Alexander Technique and taken classes that include learning about body mapping and how those techniques relate to playing the flute ergonomically without injury.

I've also had the added benefit of getting to work personally with over a thousand students while teaching music in the public schools, giving me the opportunity to work with diverse populations and to gain professional development on social-emotional ways of teaching and learning.

I believe in a holistic approach to learning the flute, understanding that it is a whole-body activity that should never be painful and that one of the keys to playing joyfully and freely without tension or pain is having a safe learning environment where students can experiment, take risks, and experience true growth.

And most importantly, I believe that playing the flute should be fun!

To this end, I work collaboratively with students, partnering with them to develop their own personal sense of musicianship while fostering an encouraging space where students learn the essential foundational skills of flute playing. We work together to then build upon those skillsets, including tone, technique, an understanding of music theory, and effective and efficient practice techniques.

  • "My daughter started lessons with Megan knowing nothing about the flute and wanting preparation for starting 6th grade band in the fall. Megan's kind and warm personality made it easy for my daughter to learn from her. Megan's encouragement and her focus on the foundations and good technique has given my daughter an excellent start. She is excited about playing flute and I attribute that largely to Megan. I would highly recommend her and, from our experience, is an excellent teacher for beginning students. We look forward to continuing lessons with her."

“Being an artist means: not numbering and counting, but ripening like a tree, which doesn’t force its sap, and stands confidently in the storms of spring, not afraid that afterward summer may not come. It does come. But it comes only to those who are patient, who are there as if eternity lay before them, so unconcernedly silent and vast. I learn it every day of my life, learn it with pain I am grateful for: patience is everything!”
